A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an Accounting Operations Coordinator on a contract-to-hire basis to support day-to-day accounting operations. This role plays a key part in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting compliance, and ensuring timely processing of transactions. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, trustworthy, and comfortable working across multiple accounting functions in a fast-paced, service-focused environment.
This position offers the opportunity to convert to a permanent role based on performance and organizational needs.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting & Financial Operations
Process and record accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions
Verify, code, and reconcile invoices, receipts, and expense reports
Review and reconcile credit card activity; investigate discrepancies and potential fraud
Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger
Maintain accurate and organized financial records, ledgers, and supporting documentation
Allocate expenses according to internal policies and departmental guidelines
Cash & Reconciliations
Process incoming payments (check, credit card, ACH/EFT)
Prepare bank deposits and perform bank reconciliations
Reconcile vendor statements and resolve variances in a timely manner
Reporting & Compliance
Assist with monthly close activities and preparation of financial reports
Generate and review routine accounting and management reports
Support internal controls and ensure adherence to accounting procedures
Assist with preparation for annual audits and provide audit support documentation
Maintain strict confidentiality of financial, payroll, and personnel information
Payroll Support
Assist with payroll processing and reporting
Collect, review, and verify timekeeping records
Support payroll reconciliations and related documentation
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Associate's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field required
Bachelor's degree preferred
1-2 years of accounting and/or payroll experience
Skills & Competencies
Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills
Proficiency with accounting systems, spreadsheets, and basic data analysis
Experience with payroll systems a plus
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Comfortable handling sensitive and confidential information
Self-starter with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environme
