This role develops work packages for overhead, underground, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects using customer GIS and WMS systems. Candidates should be comfortable in both field and office settings. Selected candidates will be trained in customer engineering and construction standards and will gain experience across a wide range of distribution engineering disciplines including structural pole modeling, electrical power calculations, GIS design, and project management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Distribution Design & Engineering
- Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV
- Support programmatic work including overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, joint use, and inspection reports
- Perform engineering calculations including structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, conductor sag and tension specifications, and voltage drop and flicker calculations
- Conduct root cause analysis of outages and mitigation using engineering principles and design
- Provide engineering support during construction including post-construction reviews
Field & Permitting
- Travel to sites as needed, perform inspections, and return to office to perform engineering design work
- Develop permitting documents for different AHJs
- Support work permit development, easements, and ROW applications
- Assess and develop design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments
Tools & Collaboration
- Use customer GIS and WMS systems such as GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, and Maximo
- Support coordination of conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements
- Comply with Leidos and client safety requirements and design and quality expectations
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline (4-year degree required; ABET accreditation not required by this client)
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to utilize a personal vehicle for customer-related travel (reimbursed at IRS-approved rates)
- Willingness to perform both field and office work including outdoor environments
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- U.S. Citizenship Required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc, or similar
- Experience using CAD tools, MicroStation, and/or GIS
- Experience with NESC
- Experience with utility design standards
