Position Summary
The Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager in Advisory oversees outsourced accounting engagements, financial reporting, and consulting projects for a portfolio of clients. This role provides strategic financial guidance, leads process improvements, and partners directly with client leadership teams to enhance financial operations. The position requires strong technical accounting skills, business acumen, and the ability to manage staff and multiple advisory projects simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities
Client Advisory & Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary advisor for assigned clients, providing insights on financial performance, accounting best practices, and operational improvements.
- Lead discovery sessions to understand client business models, workflow challenges, and strategic goals.
- Deliver monthly/quarterly financial review meetings, translating complex financial data into actionable business guidance.
Outsourced Accounting & Financial Operations
- Oversee GL maintenance, reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, and other operational accounting tasks performed by staff.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closes for multiple clients.
- Develop and maintain client accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, budgets, KPIs, dashboards, and rolling forecasts.
- Identify trends, variances, and opportunities for financial improvements.
- Advise clients on cash flow management, working capital strategies, and profitability analysis.
Process Improvement & Systems Advisory
- Recommend and implement improvements to client accounting workflows and financial systems.
- Lead or support accounting system conversions and technology implementations (e.g., QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Expensify, Gusto).
- Help clients design automation, standardization, and integration of accounting processes.
Technical Accounting & Compliance
- Provide guidance on GAAP, revenue recognition, capital vs. expense treatment, and other technical matters.
- Coordinate tax planning and compliance with the firm's tax team or external providers.
- Assist clients with audit preparation and support documentation requests.
Engagement Leadership & Staff Management
- Supervise, coach, and review the work of staff accountants and senior staff.
- Manage engagement budgets, timelines, deliverables, and client expectations.
- Provide ongoing training in accounting principles, technology tools, and advisory methodologies.
Firm & Practice Development
- Support drafting proposals, scopes of work, and advisory service offerings.
- Participate in internal initiatives to enhance the CAS practice's efficiency and capabilities.
- Identify opportunities to expand services with existing clients.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3-7+ years of public accounting or client advisory experience.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in cloud‑based accounting platforms (QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Intacct).
- Excellent communication, client‑facing, and project management skills.
Preferred
- CPA, CMA, or CPA‑eligible.
- Experience managing outsourced accounting engagements or advisory projects.
- Background in process improvement, FP&A, or accounting technology implementations.
