Controller - Washington, DC

Beacon Hill Financial is working with a growing organization that is seeking an accomplished Controller to oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, reporting, compliance, and risk management. This leadership role ensures the organization's financial integrity, supports strategic decision-making, and drives operational efficiency across global programs. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in financial management, leadership, and donor-funded environments.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Management:
    Develop and implement financial policies, systems, and controls. Monitor the organization's financial health, identify risks, and maintain effective financial management and risk mitigation systems.
  • Budget and Contract Management:
    Lead preparation of the annual budget, track performance against financial plans, oversee CGIAR program finances, and ensure compliance with donor reporting and contract requirements.
  • Accounting Operations:
    Supervise payroll, disbursements, and accounting functions. Maintain internal controls, ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, oversee tax filings, and support field offices in financial practices and reporting.
  • Cash and Investment Management:
    Manage cash flow, collections, and disbursements. Oversee investments in line with Board-approved policies and ensure sound stewardship of institutional funds.
  • Financial Reporting:
    Prepare financial reports for senior leadership, the Board, and CGIAR. Provide timely financial insights to project leaders and departments, and share required data with donors, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Audit Coordination:
    Act as the primary contact for external auditors, ensuring efficient and timely audits. Collaborate with internal audit teams to implement findings and strengthen compliance.
  • Supervision and Staff Development:
    Lead and mentor Finance staff, ensuring adequate training, professional growth, and strong team performance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven senior-level experience in grants and contracts administration.
  • Demonstrated expertise in project-based accounting across multiple cost centers; advanced spreadsheet and analytical skills required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership abilities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse, multicultural teams across all organizational levels.
