This position plays a critical role in shaping advocacy priorities, engaging with local, state, and federal officials, and advancing legislative and community awareness efforts.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and mission-driven leader who thrives at the intersection of policy, communications, and social impact-someone who can translate complex policy issues into actionable strategies that create lasting change.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive advocacy strategy aligned with the organization's mission and strategic goals.
- Monitor and analyze policy issues, legislation, funding priorities, and government actions impacting housing, homelessness, and social services.
- Create policy briefs and position statements for executive leadership, board members, and internal teams.
- Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and community coalitions to advance advocacy objectives.
- Represent the organization in public forums, community meetings, and policy roundtables.
- Lead internal education initiatives to empower staff, board members, and program participants to engage in advocacy efforts.
- Coordinate meetings and outreach with policymakers and other key stakeholders.
- Manage the organization's participation in advocacy campaigns, coalitions, and community events.
- Oversee the tracking of legislation, lobbying activities, and policy engagement metrics.
- Supervise policy and advocacy team members and manage the department's annual budget.
- Collaborate with communications and development teams to integrate advocacy into public engagement and fundraising efforts.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in public policy, political science, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in government relations, policy development, or community advocacy.
- Proven experience working with city, county, state, and federal elected officials and their staff.
- Strong understanding of public policy issues related to housing, homelessness, and social services.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to synthesize and present complex policy matters.
- High initiative, strong judgment, and collaborative mindset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to manage data tracking systems.
- Willingness to occasionally work evenings or weekends as advocacy activities require.
Work Environment
- Hybrid schedule with a blend of office, field, and community-based activities.
- Regular interaction with diverse stakeholders across multiple sectors.
- May require local travel to meetings and events.
- Occasional lifting (up to 35 lbs.) and exposure to varied environmental conditions during field work.
