Human Resources Assistant (Nonprofit)
Location: Skid Row Area, Downtown Los Angeles, CA
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire
A mission-driven nonprofit organization serving the Skid Row community is seeking an HR Assistant to support day-to-day Human Resources operations. This role will assist with employee onboarding, HR records management, recruiting coordination, benefits administration, and compliance-related activities. The ideal candidate is highly organized, maintains confidentiality, and enjoys supporting employees in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate onboarding activities, including new hire paperwork, orientations, background checks, and employee setup.
- Maintain and update employee records, personnel files, and HRIS data to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assist with recruitment efforts by posting job openings, screening applications, scheduling interviews, and communicating with candidates.
- Support employee status changes, onboarding, offboarding, and other personnel transactions.
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding benefits, leaves of absence, policies, and HR procedures.
- Assist with benefits enrollment, open enrollment activities, and employee documentation.
- Prepare employment verifications, reports, correspondence, and other HR-related documents.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, as well as organizational policies and procedures.
- Audit HR records and employee data for accuracy and completeness.
- Support payroll administration by tracking employee changes and submitting required documentation.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee information and sensitive HR records.
- Provide general administrative support to the HR department and assist with special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- 1+ years of Human Resources, Recruiting, Administrative, or related experience.
- Experience supporting onboarding, employee records, or recruiting activities preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Paycom or other HRIS platforms is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
- Experience working in a nonprofit or social services environment is highly preferred.
