Human Resources Assistant (Nonprofit)

Location: Skid Row Area, Downtown Los Angeles, CA
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire

A mission-driven nonprofit organization serving the Skid Row community is seeking an HR Assistant to support day-to-day Human Resources operations. This role will assist with employee onboarding, HR records management, recruiting coordination, benefits administration, and compliance-related activities. The ideal candidate is highly organized, maintains confidentiality, and enjoys supporting employees in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate onboarding activities, including new hire paperwork, orientations, background checks, and employee setup.
  • Maintain and update employee records, personnel files, and HRIS data to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist with recruitment efforts by posting job openings, screening applications, scheduling interviews, and communicating with candidates.
  • Support employee status changes, onboarding, offboarding, and other personnel transactions.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding benefits, leaves of absence, policies, and HR procedures.
  • Assist with benefits enrollment, open enrollment activities, and employee documentation.
  • Prepare employment verifications, reports, correspondence, and other HR-related documents.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, as well as organizational policies and procedures.
  • Audit HR records and employee data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Support payroll administration by tracking employee changes and submitting required documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee information and sensitive HR records.
  • Provide general administrative support to the HR department and assist with special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 1+ years of Human Resources, Recruiting, Administrative, or related experience.
  • Experience supporting onboarding, employee records, or recruiting activities preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Paycom or other HRIS platforms is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit or social services environment is highly preferred.
