CISCO Nexus Network Engineer I

Schedule: Hybrid – 4 days onsite / 1 day remote
Team: Data Center Network Team
Start: ASAP
Duration: 6-12 month contract. Potential for extension or conversion.


About the Role

We are seeking a CISCO Nexus Network Engineer I to join a highly successful and collaborative Data Center Network Team in Charlotte, NC. This role supports the deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of Cisco Nexus infrastructure across multiple data center environments.

You will work under an experienced and well-respected manager who values transparency, honesty, and work-life balance. The team operates in a structured environment with peer-reviewed configurations and clearly defined processes to ensure stability and success.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy and configure Cisco Nexus hardware (7K, 5K, 2K, and 9K switches)
  • Perform hands-on CLI configuration (not limited to show commands)
  • Assist with porting, routing, and switch configurations
  • Support Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking tasks
  • Troubleshoot network issues, identify root causes, and implement fixes
  • Work with routing protocols including EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, and ISIS
  • Collaborate with firewall and load-balancing teams (hands-on interaction, not ownership)
  • Use Nexus Dashboard Fabric Controller and CLI tools for monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Create tickets and Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for peer and senior engineer review
  • Support data center growth by adding new servers and next-generation network hookup

Required Technical Skills

Top Skills (in order of importance):

  1. hands-on Cisco Nexus CLI configuration experience
    • Must include real configuration work, not just monitoring or show commands
  2. Palo Alto Firewall experience
  3. Ability to work calmly and honestly under pressure

Technical Requirements:

  • 2-3 years of routing and switching experience
  • Cisco Nexus experience strongly preferred (9K, 7K, 5K, 2K)
    • Other Cisco routing/switching experience considered if Nexus exposure is limited
  • Solid understanding of core networking concepts:
    • DNS, IP addressing, routing, switching, circuits
    • Port configuration, firewall concepts
  • Strong troubleshooting skills

  • Cisco-based data center supporting ~800 servers
  • Segmented environments including:
    • Management Network
    • Telephony Network
    • Billing Network
  • Frequent exposure to next-generation networking technologies
  • Structured change management with multiple reviews before migrations

Schedule & Flexibility

  • Flexible start times:
    • 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
    • 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
    • 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • No more than 40 hours per week unless approved
  • Furloughs:
    • Thanksgiving week
    • December 23 – December 31

Interview Process

  1. Round 1: 1-hour Webex interview with the hiring manager and two engineers (technical)
  2. Round 2: 15-30 minute Webex interview with the manager focused on personality fit and alignment
