Job Title: Patient Access Specialist

Training Duration: Approximately 2 weeks (full-time orientation preferred)
Position Summary
Beacon Hill’s client in Saint Paul is seeking Patient Access Specialists to join their Emergency Department team. This role serves as the first point of contact for patients and families, promoting a positive experience and ensuring efficient registration processes. Responsibilities include collecting and verifying patient demographic and financial information, securing consents, and utilizing web-based systems for insurance verification. The specialist also facilitates referrals to financial resources and communicates with clinics and ancillary services regarding coverage issues.
This position ensures compliance with local, state, federal, and third-party regulations, while striving to reduce wait times and enhance patient satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient registration and pre-registration
- Insurance verification and eligibility checks
- Identification and collection of patient financial obligations
- Referral to financial counseling for assistance options
- Initial authorization and payer notification
- Delivering excellent customer service and acting as a resource for patients
- Supporting team members and management in alignment with organizational mission and vision
Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Post-secondary education preferred
Licensure/Certification:
- Medical Terminology certificate preferred
Experience:
- 1-2 years of registration or healthcare revenue cycle experience preferred
- Familiarity with insurance verification, prior authorizations, and payer requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology and coding practices preferred
- Experience with cash collection and working in team environments
Skills:
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Proficiency in Windows-based systems and data entry (40 WPM)
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively
- Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Understanding of revenue cycle and patient accounts philosophy

Position 1: 0.6 FTE, Evenings/Overnights, No Weekends
- Week 1: Tuesday & Friday, 5:00 PM – 5:30 AM
- Week 2: Tuesday & Thursday, 5:00 PM – 5:30 AM
Position 2: 0.6 FTE, Evenings, Every Other Weekend
- Week 1: Sat, Sun, Mon & Wed, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
- Week 2: Mon & Wed, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Position 3: 0.8 FTE, Evenings, Every Other Weekend
- Week 1: Tue, Thu & Fri, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
- Week 2: Sat, Sun, Tue, Thu & Fri, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Position 4: 0.6 FTE, Evenings/Overnights, Every Other Weekend
- Week 1: Sun, Mon & Wed, 5:00 PM – 5:30 AM
- Week 2: Sat & Sun, 5:00 PM – 5:30 AM
Position 5: 0.8 FTE, Days, Every Weekend
- Week 1 & 2: Sat, Sun, Mon & Fri, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Position 6: 0.45 FTE, Mixed Shifts
- Week 1: Friday (8 hours)
- Week 2: Saturday & Sunday (8 hours), Friday (12 hours)
- Shifts vary between 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM or 9:00 AM – 9:30 PM
- Additional shifts may be available to cover PTO
