Position Summary
The Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable management of daily waste collection, hauling, transfer station, recycling, and disposal operations. This role provides leadership to supervisors, drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, and other operational personnel while ensuring compliance with DOT, OSHA, environmental regulations, and company policies. The Operations Manager drives operational excellence, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, and financial performance across assigned facilities and service areas
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Oversee daily collection, hauling, transfer station, recycling, landfill, and related operations.
- Manage route efficiency, productivity, equipment utilization, and labor performance.
- Ensure all customer service commitments and service levels are met.
- Monitor operational KPIs including route completion, missed pickups, fuel consumption, overtime, safety incidents, and maintenance costs.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
Team Management
- Lead, coach, and develop Operations Supervisors, Drivers, Dispatchers
- Conduct regular performance reviews and employee development discussions.
- Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, training, and retention initiatives.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and enforce all safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, environmental regulations, and company standards.
- Conduct safety meetings, accident reviews, and corrective action initiatives.
- Investigate accidents, injuries, customer complaints, and vehicle incidents.
- Ensure driver qualification files, training records, and compliance documentation remain current.
Financial & Performance Management
- Manage labor costs, overtime, fuel usage, equipment expenses, and operating budgets.
- Analyze operational reports and financial metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Partner with leadership to achieve revenue, EBITDA, and operational performance goals.
- Review staffing levels and adjust resources based on operational demands.
Fleet & Equipment Oversight
- Coordinate with Fleet and Maintenance teams to maximize equipment uptime.
- Ensure vehicles and heavy equipment are properly maintained and available for operations.
- Monitor equipment replacement needs and capital expenditure requests.
- Support preventative maintenance initiatives and fleet utilization programs.
Customer & Community Relations
- Resolve escalated customer service issues in a professional and timely manner.
- Maintain positive relationships with municipal, commercial, industrial, and residential customers.
- Represent the company professionally within the community and industry.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations Management, Logistics, Transportation, Environmental Services, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive management experience in waste, recycling, transportation
- Experience leading large hourly workforces preferred.
- Multi-site operational management experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of waste collection, hauling, transfer station, recycling, landfill, or transportation operations.
- Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, OSHA requirements, and fleet management practices.
- Proven leadership and team development abilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and operational management software.
