Biochemist II
Location: St Louis, MO
We’re seeking an experienced Biochemist II to join an R&D team focused on improving and scaling the manufacturing process for a naturally derived, fermentation-based active ingredient used in consumer pest control products.
This is a newly created position driven by a high-priority business need. The team is looking for a scientist who can evaluate an existing manufacturing process, identify sources of variability, and develop solutions that improve consistency, scalability, and overall process performance.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Design and execute bench-scale and pilot-scale studies to optimize fermentation and biological processing conditions.
- Investigate process variability and identify critical parameters impacting yield, cycle time, and product quality.
- Support scale-up activities and collaborate closely with manufacturing operations to implement process improvements.
- Develop quality metrics, analyze process data, and establish robust manufacturing controls.
- Author technical reports, SOPs, batch records, and process development documentation.
- Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and R&D teams to drive projects from development through commercial implementation.
- Evaluate raw material and substrate impacts on process performance, kinetics, and final product quality.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for manufacturing challenges and recommend continuous improvement initiatives.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in fermentation, biological process development, bioprocessing, or biologically active ingredient manufacturing.
- Strong experience working directly with manufacturing operations and production teams.
- Experience supporting process optimization, scale-up, technology transfer, or manufacturing improvements.
- Background in microbiology, biological systems, fermentation science, or related process development activities.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced manufacturing and R&D environment.
Preferred Experience
- Fermentation process development or biological active ingredient manufacturing.
- Agricultural, consumer products, biotechnology, fermentation, food science, or industrial microbiology environments.
- Experience supporting pilot plant or commercial manufacturing operations.
- Familiarity with DoE, statistical analysis, JMP, Minitab, or similar tools.
- Experience with natural product processing, microbial systems, or biologically derived active ingredients.
Why This Role?
- Opportunity to solve a complex manufacturing challenge and make a measurable impact on product quality and process consistency.
- High level of interaction with manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and R&D teams.
- Strong focus on process optimization, scale-up, and commercialization activities.
- Visibility with leadership and the ability to influence long-term manufacturing strategy.
- Hands-on role spanning laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing environments.
If you’re a hands-on scientist with a passion for process improvement, microbiology, fermentation, and manufacturing support, we’d be happy to hear from you.
