Summary
This is an opportunity for an experienced GIS technology professional to shape complex modernization programs for large utility environments. You’ll combine Esri Utility Network expertise with enterprise architecture, systems integration, and technical leadership to turn business needs into practical technology strategies. The role offers significant ownership, visibility, and the chance to influence programs from early roadmap development through implementation and validation. You’ll work closely with client stakeholders and multidisciplinary delivery teams while helping other technical professionals grow.
About the Opportunity
Join a consulting and technology team helping utility organizations modernize the systems that support critical infrastructure. You’ll operate at the intersection of GIS, enterprise technology, and utility operations, influencing both long-term strategy and real-world delivery.
This is a strong fit for someone who enjoys solving complex architecture problems, translating between business and technical audiences, and being a trusted technical voice on high-impact transformation initiatives.
What You’ll Do
Architecture & Technology Strategy
Help clients establish a clear path from their current technology environment to a scalable future state.
- Shape GIS and enterprise technology modernization roadmaps.
- Design solution architectures that connect GIS with broader operational and enterprise systems.
- Translate business capabilities and requirements into practical architectural approaches.
- Identify integration, scalability, configuration, and compatibility considerations early enough to keep programs moving.
Technical Leadership & Delivery
Provide hands-on architectural leadership throughout major implementation and integration efforts.
- Guide technical decisions across design, development, integration, testing, and deployment.
- Establish architectural direction without losing sight of business outcomes.
- Partner with engineering and quality teams to resolve complex technical challenges.
- Help ensure solutions are reliable, maintainable, and aligned with user expectations.
Requirements & Solution Design
Create alignment between stakeholders, requirements, and the technology being delivered.
- Facilitate discovery and translate operational needs into solution requirements and use cases.
- Produce clear architectural views, specifications, configuration guidance, and decision documentation.
- Validate proposed solutions against functional and technical requirements.
- Bring structure to complex programs where multiple systems and stakeholder groups need to work together.
Technical Mentorship & Client Partnership
Serve as a senior technical resource for both delivery teams and client stakeholders.
- Explain sophisticated technical concepts in clear business terms.
- Build credibility with technical leaders, operational stakeholders, and project teams.
- Mentor engineers and other technology professionals.
- Encourage strong architecture, documentation, and delivery practices across the team.
What You Bring
You don’t need to match every item below. Strong candidates will typically bring a combination of the following:
- Meaningful hands-on experience with Esri Utility Network, including an understanding of how it fits into enterprise utility environments.
- A background delivering GIS, technology modernization, systems integration, or enterprise architecture initiatives.
- Experience translating business requirements into architecture, technical specifications, or solution designs.
- Working knowledge of electric or gas utility operations and the technology that supports asset, network, or field-oriented business processes.
- Experience guiding developers, engineers, integration teams, or quality professionals through complex implementations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially when working across technical and business audiences.
- Comfort taking ownership of ambiguous technical problems and moving teams toward practical decisions.
- A bachelor’s degree in GIS, computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field, or comparable professional experience.
Nice to Have
These experiences can add value, but they are not expected to be a perfect checklist:
- Exposure to asset or work management platforms used in utility environments.
- Familiarity with legacy or adjacent Esri network technologies, such as geometric networks or pipeline referencing.
- Understanding of integrity management solutions or related utility operational systems.
- Experience connecting GIS platforms with enterprise applications and operational workflows.
- Previous consulting experience supporting large-scale technology transformation programs.
What Success Looks Like
Success means becoming a trusted architecture partner who can see both the big picture and the implementation realities underneath it. You’ll help create solutions that are technically sound, understandable to stakeholders, and practical for delivery teams to execute.
You’ll thrive in this role if you enjoy solving difficult GIS architecture problems, influencing technology strategy, collaborating directly with clients, and helping teams turn complex requirements into scalable solutions.
