Payroll Specialist

Our client, a well-established and growing organization in the Raleigh area, is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a payroll professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, values accuracy and compliance, and wants to be a key contributor to the employee experience. As the Payroll Specialist, you will be responsible for processing payroll, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, maintaining payroll records, and partnering with HR and Accounting to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time. Responsibilities As the Payroll Specialist, you will be responsible for:
- Processing weekly, bi-weekly, or semi-monthly payrolls for a multi-state employee population
- Reviewing and auditing payroll data to ensure accuracy of wages, deductions, commissions, and bonuses
- Maintaining payroll records and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
- Managing employee payroll changes, including new hires, terminations, promotions, and compensation adjustments
- Responding to employee inquiries regarding pay, deductions, taxes, and timekeeping issues
- Reconciling payroll reports and assisting with payroll-related general ledger entries
- Preparing payroll tax filings and supporting year-end processes, including W-2s
- Partnering with HR and benefits teams to ensure accurate benefit deductions and employee data
- Assisting with payroll audits and providing supporting documentation as needed
- Identifying process improvements to enhance payroll efficiency, accuracy, and compliance
Qualifications To be considered for this position, candidates should have:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field preferred
- 2+ years of payroll processing experience
- Experience processing multi-state payroll and understanding payroll tax regulations
- Knowledge of payroll systems such as ADP, Paycom, UKG, Workday, or similar platforms
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and comfort working with large data sets
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality
- Experience reconciling payroll reports and supporting audits
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize responsibilities effectively
- Strong communication skills and a customer-service mindset when supporting employees
