Outside Sales Representative
Reports To: Director of Sales
Position Overview
The Outside Sales Representative is responsible for generating new business, managing key accounts, and driving sales growth within an assigned territory. This role focuses on developing relationships with end users, architects/designers, and general contractors, identifying project opportunities, and managing the sales process from initial contact through close.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Business Development
- Conduct a minimum of four sales appointments per day, scheduled in advance; use cold calls as needed to fill open time
- Identify and pursue opportunities with new and existing customers, including new construction and retrofit/service projects
- Promote products and solutions to decision-makers through in-person meetings and presentations
- Track industry leads and project opportunities from construction reports, public notices, and manufacturer referrals
- Prepare take-offs, field surveys, and job site verifications as required for quoting and project planning
Account Management & Follow-Up
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with customers, architects, and contractors
- Follow up on quotes and proposals consistently to secure orders
- Negotiate pricing and contract terms in alignment with management direction
- Maintain regular communication with internal teams to support order processing and project execution
Project & Internal Coordination
- Assist with project administration and support project managers as needed
- Attend job site or office meetings related to active projects
- Support issue resolution to ensure projects stay on schedule and customer expectations are met
- Assist with collections on past-due balances when requested
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain accurate call reports, account notes, and route plans using the company CRM
- Submit complete and accurate field reports, surveys, and project documentation
- Provide copies of proposals, estimates, and supporting documents for internal tracking
- Keep all customer and internal communications documented in writing
Territory & Time Management
- Plan weekly route schedules to maximize face-to-face selling time
- Organize appointments by geographic area to reduce travel time
- Submit weekly schedules and activity reports as required
Qualifications & Skills
- Proven experience in outside or field sales, preferably within construction-related or technical products
- Strong relationship-building, communication, and presentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple opportunities and deadlines simultaneously
- Comfortable working independently in a territory-based role
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-up and documentation habits
- Working knowledge of construction processes, plans, and project workflows preferred
