Overview
A professional services organization based in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and lead core financial functions. This role partners closely with leadership and plays a key part in maintaining the integrity of financial reporting, ensuring compliance, and supporting operational efficiency across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the full client billing cycle, including pre-bills, invoice generation, edits, write-offs, and final submission
- Ensure billing accuracy and compliance with client guidelines, engagement terms, and contract requirements
- Partner with internal stakeholders to review time entries, resolve billing discrepancies, and ensure timely submissions
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and lead collections efforts to improve cash flow
- Maintain and reconcile client-related accounts in accordance with industry-specific compliance requirements
- Support day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll coordination, cash management, and general ledger activity
- Assist with month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Ensure all financial transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP and internal policies
- Review and approve vendor payments, ensuring proper authorization and coding
- Prepare billing analyses and financial reports for leadership
- Train internal teams on billing procedures, timekeeping protocols, and financial processes
- Support process improvements, system enhancements, and ad hoc financial projects
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of accounting experience, ideally within a professional services environment
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and core accounting functions (GL, close, reconciliations)
- Experience with complex billing operations, including client-specific requirements and collections management
- Exposure to trust or regulated account management preferred
- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with financial reporting tools
- Experience with ERP or accounting systems; exposure to industry-specific platforms is a plus
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate across teams
- Law Firm experience preferred
