Accounting Manager – Greenbelt, MD
Overview
Beacon Hill Financial has partnered with a nonprofit organization in Greenbelt, MD in their search for an Accounting Manager to join their team. This position plays a key role in supporting day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, and audit readiness while partnering closely with leadership on budgeting and financial oversight. The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit accounting experience, a hands-on approach to operations, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Support financial reporting, including internal management reports and board-level materials.
- Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis (supporting budgets in the ~$30M range).
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards.
- Lead audit preparation efforts, including coordination with external auditors and preparation of audit schedules.
- Support cash flow monitoring and financial planning initiatives.
- Assist in oversight of payroll processes as needed (experience is flexible but exposure is preferred).
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or progress toward CPA preferred.
- Strong nonprofit accounting experience, including exposure to fund accounting and donor/grant reporting.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with operational accounting and month-end close.
- Experience supporting audits and working directly with external auditors.
- Background in budgeting and financial planning; experience supporting mid-sized organizational budgets preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
- Experience with accounting systems required; exposure to ERP systems preferred
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and ability to analyze financial data.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
