Senior Staff Accountant
About the Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to join a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This position will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting monthly and year-end close processes, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The ideal candidate will bring strong general ledger experience, a collaborative mindset, and a solid understanding of nonprofit accounting principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and post journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of financial transactions.
- Prepare financial statements and supporting reports for leadership.
- Monitor and analyze budget-to-actual results and investigate variances.
- Support grant accounting, restricted funds tracking, and donor reporting requirements.
- Assist with annual audits, tax filings, and compliance reporting.
- Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and other key financial records.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and strengthen internal controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Prior nonprofit accounting experience required.
- Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Experience with grant accounting, fund accounting, or restricted funds strongly preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
