Controller – Job Description

Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the day‑to‑day accounting operations of the organization and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting. This role supports compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant and donor restrictions, and internal controls while partnering closely with Finance leadership, program teams, and external auditors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the organization’s accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and cash management.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year‑end financial close processes, including preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), donor restrictions, and grant requirements.
  • Manage revenue recognition for contributions, grants, memberships, program fees, and other funding sources in accordance with applicable guidance.
  • Oversee grant accounting, including tracking restricted funds, reconciling grant activity to the general ledger, and supporting grant reporting and compliance.
  • Prepare and review financial reports for internal leadership, board committees, and external stakeholders.
  • Support the annual audit and tax filings by coordinating schedules, documentation, and responses to auditor requests.
  • Strengthen and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures to support accuracy and accountability.
  • Partner with program, development, and operations teams to ensure proper financial tracking and reporting of funded activities.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support organizational planning.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
  • Participate in special projects and process improvements as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required).
  • Progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit or grant‑funded environment.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, revenue recognition, and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting audits and working with external auditors.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate cross‑functionally.
