Role Summary
The organization is seeking a Controller to lead day-to-day accounting operations within its Finance function. This role oversees a small finance team and is responsible for accounting, accounts payable and receivable, cash management, and financial reporting across multiple affiliated nonprofit entities and related funds. The Controller will also ensure strong internal controls and support successful annual audits.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze financial data and deliver accurate, timely financial reporting
Prepare and clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements
Monitor financial performance and keep senior leadership informed of financial status
Partner with the CFO to support board-level audit and budget committee discussions
Manage organizational cash flow forecasting
Establish and maintain finance and administrative systems to support operations
Maintain internal controls and safeguard revenues, expenditures, and budgets
Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems in compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
Design and maintain an effective finance team structure to meet departmental objectives
Coordinate annual business insurance renewals
Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and oversee audit preparation
Oversee preparation of tax schedules, including Form 990 and related filings
Oversee preparation of required lobbying and regulatory reports
Support leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process
Monitor and analyze monthly results versus budget and investigate variances
Administer financial plans and recommend corrective actions as needed
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
CPA strongly preferred
10+ years of experience at the Director or Controller level preferred
Prior experience managing and developing a finance team required
Nonprofit accounting experience required
Strong understanding of financial best practices and procedures
Public accounting experience a plus
Proven track record of timely and accurate month-end close and reporting
Strong financial systems and process management skills
Experience implementing or upgrading financial software systems preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
