Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Controller to support a large, complex municipal environment entity. This role is ideal for someone who has operated at a high level but is still comfortable getting into the details. The Controller will play a key role in strengthening financial operations, with an immediate focus on capital improvement projects (CIP), fixed assets, and audit readiness.
***While this role is remote, candidates must have California government agency experience for consideration***
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, month-end close, and financial reporting
- Review and reconcile capital improvement projects (CIP) and fixed asset schedules
- Clean up and streamline construction-in-progress (CIP) accounting and reporting
- Support audit preparation, including workpapers, schedules, and addressing audit findings
- Ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards (GAAP/GASB)
- Partner with internal departments on project tracking, budgets, and financial analysis
- Assist with ERP-related initiatives (Workday experience is a plus)
- Evaluate and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with strong municipal/government background
- Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience preferred
- Hands-on experience with CIP, fixed assets, and fund accounting
- Experience working in environments with $100M+ budgets strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of audit processes and financial reporting
- ERP experience required; Workday is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
