Beacon Hill’s client, a national nonprofit organization, is seeking a Rights & Permissions Specialist to support its contracts and intellectual property function.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with hands-on experience in copyright, rights and permissions, third-party licensing, and intellectual property compliance. The ideal candidate will be comfortable independently researching rights holders, securing permissions, reviewing licensing terms, and maintaining accurate records of third-party intellectual property. Candidates with approximately 3+ years of relevant experience are preferred; however, candidates with less tenure will be considered if they have strong substantive experience and can quickly step into the work.

Pay: $35-$50/hour, depending on experience
Qualifications:
Preferred experience:
- Hands-on experience with copyright, rights and permissions, and/or asset licensing
- Approximately 3+ years of relevant experience preferred, although years alone are not a hard requirement
- Ability to independently research rights holders and navigate third-party permission and licensing processes
- Familiarity with licensing agreements, contractual terms, intellectual property rights, and copyright requirements
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple licenses, deadlines, restrictions, and renewals
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate documentation
Education / Additional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Intellectual Property, or a related field preferred
- Paralegal certificate preferred, but not required
- Prior intellectual property or copyright-focused paralegal experience is also highly relevant
Responsibilities:
- Review content and identify potential copyright, licensing, and permissions requirements
- Research copyright ownership and identify appropriate rights holders
- Obtain permissions and licenses for third-party materials
- Communicate and negotiate licensing terms, usage rights, and fees
- Draft permission requests and licensing agreements using established templates
- Purchase and maintain third-party licenses
- Track license terms, permitted uses, restrictions, renewals, and expiration dates
- Conduct periodic audits to ensure continued copyright and licensing compliance
- Maintain accurate rights, permissions, and asset records within a Digital Asset Management (DAM) system
- Partner with internal teams to explain copyright restrictions and appropriate use of third-party materials
- Support the intellectual property team with broader copyright and asset compliance initiatives
- Assist with external requests seeking permission to use the organization’s intellectual property
- Help identify opportunities to improve rights and permissions processes and workflows
