Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Telecommunications Technician III (Radio Technician) to support statewide radio communications systems used across multiple field and administrative operations. This position plays a vital role in maintaining reliable radio communications for field operations and day-to-day business functions.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience installing, programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting conventional and P25 radio systems and related electronic equipment. The role involves both fieldwork and technical bench work, supporting a large network of handheld, mobile, and base station radios across numerous locations.
Key Responsibilities
Radio System Maintenance & Support

Install, configure, and maintain analog and digital (P25) radio communications systems, including handhelds, mobiles, repeaters, and base stations.

Conduct routine maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs using specialized radio test equipment (e.g., service monitors, multimeters, antenna analyzers, and power meters).

Perform programming and firmware updates for radio equipment and ensure proper functionality across the fleet.

Support infrastructure at tower sites, including inspections, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Assist in managing radio frequencies, licensing, and interoperability standards in compliance with FCC requirements.
Installation & Integration

Install radio and electronic systems in vehicles, offices, and remote facilities.

Support the development and implementation of new radio systems and upgrades statewide.

Ensure installations adhere to technical and safety standards and best practices.
Technical Assistance & Consultation

Provide technical support and guidance to internal users and field personnel regarding radio operations and functionality.

Partner with engineers, technicians, and vendors to resolve system issues and implement improvements.

Assist in developing technical documentation, diagrams, and training materials for system users.
Inventory & Compliance

Maintain accurate records of all radio assets, programming files (code plugs), and configurations.

Collaborate with inventory and frequency management staff to ensure proper documentation and system compliance.

Assist with field surveys and asset management to identify communication needs and recommend improvements.
Training & Professional Development

Participate in training and workshops to stay current with emerging radio and telecommunications technologies.

Share technical knowledge and best practices with team members and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications

2+ years of experience with conventional VHF radio systems and general radio system operability.

2+ years of hands-on experience with electronic equipment installation and maintenance, including vehicle and office-based systems.

Strong technical aptitude and understanding of radio equipment and digital/analog radio systems.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate across teams.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team, often in field environments across the state.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience using radio test equipment such as service monitors, power meters, and antenna analyzers.

Proficiency in radio programming and firmware management.

Knowledge of networking and cabling, including copper and fiber optic systems.

Experience troubleshooting complex radio or RF systems.

Familiarity with FCC licensing procedures and radio frequency coordination.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access).
Additional Details
This position involves regular fieldwork and travel to multiple locations across Wisconsin to support communications infrastructure. Candidates should be comfortable with hands-on technical tasks, equipment transport, and outdoor site work as needed.
This is a highly collaborative role requiring coordination with engineers, tower specialists, system administrators, and other radio professionals to ensure reliable communication systems that support statewide operations and safety initiatives.
