Staff Platform Engineer / Platform Architect
100% Remote | West Coast Hours
Ideal Profile
The strongest candidate is someone who has actually built platforms, not simply supported established enterprise infrastructure.
This person should be comfortable joining a small team where the architecture and processes are still being developed, taking broad ownership, moving quickly, and working across AWS, IaC, CI/CD, deployments, and production operations.
Overview
Seeking a highly hands-on Staff Platform Engineer / Platform Architect to help design and build a new cloud platform from the ground up. This is a true greenfield environment where the engineer will have significant ownership over cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, deployment architecture, automation, and production operations.
This is not a traditional infrastructure support role. The ideal candidate has experience working in startup-style or small engineering environments, partnering directly with application/product engineers, and taking infrastructure from initial design through production.
Must-Haves
- Staff/Principal-level Platform Engineering, DevOps, Cloud Infrastructure, or Platform Architecture experience.
- Deep hands-on AWS experience.
- Strong Infrastructure as Code (IaC) experience.
- Hands-on experience with Terraform.
- Strong experience with TypeScript.
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, ideally with GitHub Actions or similar tooling.
- Proven experience building cloud/platform infrastructure from the ground up.
- Experience owning infrastructure across the full lifecycle: architecture → build → deployment → production operations.
- Strong understanding of cloud architecture, deployment, scalability, reliability, and operational practices.
- Experience working directly with software/product engineering teams rather than solely within a centralized infrastructure organization.
- Experience in a greenfield, startup, or small-team environment with minimal established processes.
- Ability to operate across multiple areas of platform engineering rather than specializing in only one infrastructure function.
- Strong system design and technical architecture skills.
- Hands-on experience using AI development tools such as Claude, Gemini, Copilot, or similar tools as part of engineering workflows.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to explain architecture decisions and technical trade-offs.
- Ability to work primarily West Coast hours.
Preferred
- Pulumi experience.
- Experience with agentic AI or AI-assisted platform/infrastructure engineering.
- Experience building developer tooling and improving developer experience.
- Experience working on high-volume e-commerce, booking, transaction, or SaaS platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build AWS infrastructure supporting a new cloud-based platform.
- Establish and evolve Infrastructure as Code practices using Terraform and related technologies.
- Build and maintain CI/CD and automated deployment pipelines.
- Partner closely with application engineers on infrastructure, deployment, and operational decisions.
- Design scalable, reliable, and production-ready platform architecture.
- Help establish platform engineering standards and operational practices in a greenfield environment.
- Automate infrastructure and engineering workflows wherever possible.
- Leverage AI tools to improve engineering productivity and problem-solving.
- Own solutions through implementation, deployment, and production operations.
- Provide Staff-level technical leadership while remaining highly hands-on.
