Manufacturing Engineer – PCB Assembly (SMT)
Contract-to-Hire | Onsite | Madison, WI
Pay Rate: $50-65/hour (W2, based on experience)
Duration: 6-month contract with intent to convert
About the Opportunity
This is an onsite, contract-to-hire opportunity for a senior-level Manufacturing Engineer to play a key role in automated PCB assembly operations, with strong potential for permanent conversion.
Role Overview
The Manufacturing Engineer – PCB Assembly (SMT) supports and optimizes automated printed circuit board (PCB) assembly processes, with a primary focus on Surface Mount Technology (SMT). This is a senior engineering role responsible for programming, validating, and troubleshooting automated assembly equipment to ensure high quality, yield, and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities
PCB Assembly Process Ownership
- Lead and optimize automated PCB assembly processes, primarily SMT
- Support through-hole, reflow, inspection, and test operations as needed
- Drive improvements in process capability, yield, and long-term reliability
Equipment Programming & Optimization
- Program and support off-the-shelf automated PCB assembly equipment (e.g., Mycronic MY300, MYDATA MY19)
- Review engineering files and configure machine programs for accurate component placement and execution
- Validate programs through controlled runs and documented process verification
Machine Interaction & Validation
- Manually feed PCBs during setup, validation, and troubleshooting to verify programs and resolve issues
- Initiate and monitor machine runs via computer interface (keyboard/screen)
- Observe machine operation through protective glass enclosures with safety interlocks
- Partner with production operators, who handle routine day-to-day machine operation
Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
- Lead complex PCB-level troubleshooting and defect analysis
- Diagnose placement, solder, and process-related issues
- Implement corrective actions and return optimized programs to production
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Partner with design teams to conduct DFM reviews
- Provide actionable feedback to ensure PCB designs are optimized for automated assembly
Documentation & Technical Leadership
- Develop and maintain PCB assembly and process documentation
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians
- Evaluate new equipment, materials, and process improvement opportunities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, or related)
- Strong hands-on experience with SMT processes and automated pick-and-place equipment
- Proven troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while providing technical leadership
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Mycronic / MYDATA SMT platforms
- Experience with AOI, reflow profiling, and inspection processes
- Prior experience mentoring engineers or technicians
