Senior Billing Manager – Law Firm

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this senior-level role sits at the heart of the finance and accounting function at a well-established law firm. The ideal candidate will drive innovation in fee arrangements, modernize billing practices and processes, and lead a high-performing Billing and Collections team. This individual will collaborate closely with managers, directors, and attorneys to deliver practical, solution-oriented approaches to complex billing and collections challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Manager will oversee all firm-wide billing activity, including standard billing, alternative fee arrangements, and LEDES/e-billing structures. Responsibilities include managing unbilled time and uncollected invoices and escalating unresolved items to firm leadership for timely resolution. The role carries direct oversight of the billing and collections team, along with responsibility for guiding attorneys, the billing manager, and billing coordinators on creative approaches to client matter budget development.

A core focus of the position is driving consistency and standardization across billing and collections practices while accommodating client-specific requirements. The Senior Manager will monitor industry trends related to the revenue cycle, develop and maintain billing and collections forecasts and reporting, and align those insights with broader organizational goals. Firm-wide collections strategy – from design through execution – falls within this role’s scope.

Additional responsibilities include training staff on billing needs and procedural changes, coordinating with the broader Finance and Accounting team, managing client billing and collections requests, and handling data requests for timekeepers assigned to specific matters. The Senior Manager will also oversee billing and collections technology, implement automated processes to improve partner and client ROI, and support system upgrades and other technology-driven initiatives as needed.

Education, Experience, and Skills

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in a closely related field and bring extensive experience in financial management, billing, and collections within a law firm environment. Strong analytical ability and familiarity with a range of financial management tools are required, as is demonstrated leadership and team management experience.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and any role-specific systems. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team. The ability to perform effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines while maintaining strong relationships with peers and leadership is a must.
