Position Overview
The Director of Finance is a senior operational finance leader responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls functions. Reporting to senior leadership, this individual will ensure the integrity of the organization’s financial operations while supporting strategic planning and organizational growth. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Los Angeles, California.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Finance will oversee all general ledger accounting activities, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. The Director will manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, producing timely and accurate financial statements and reports for senior leadership and the board of directors.
The Director will serve as the primary administrator of the organization’s ERP system, maintaining data integrity and identifying opportunities to improve system utilization and financial workflows. The Director will also oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and cash management functions, ensuring operational efficiency across all finance departments.
The Director will lead the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors and ensuring all required documentation and schedules are prepared accurately and on time. The Director will also support the preparation of the organization’s annual Form 990 and other regulatory filings in coordination with external advisors.
Additionally, the Director will develop, implement, and maintain robust internal controls and financial policies to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. The Director will mentor and manage finance staff, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. A CPA designation or progress toward CPA licensure is strongly preferred. A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in accounting and finance is required, including prior experience in a controller or senior accounting leadership role.
Experience in public accounting, particularly at a Big Four or large regional firm, is highly valued, as is prior exposure to nonprofit accounting and reporting requirements. Proficiency with ERP systems – particularly Sage 300 or similar platforms – is expected, along with strong command of general ledger management, financial consolidations, and budgeting processes.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing competing priorities in a dynamic environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the Director will collaborate closely with senior leadership, program staff, and external partners.
