Our client, one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in Texas based in West Houston, is seeking a Director-level Benefits Consultant to provide senior leadership coverage across its benefits portfolio during a critical engagement. This individual will operate in a strategic and operational capacity, partnering closely with executive leadership while overseeing day-to-day benefits administration and ensuring the effective delivery of programs across the organization.

This engagement requires a seasoned benefits leader with deep expertise across health and welfare plans, retirement programs, compliance, and overall benefits strategy within a complex, multi-divisional organization-ideally within a healthcare system. The consultant will help maintain continuity across benefits operations, support ongoing initiatives, and ensure programs remain compliant, competitive, and aligned with organizational objectives.

This is a hybrid, 3-month contract Monday-Friday role that runs from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive benefits strategy that integrates health & welfare and financial programs into a competitive, unified total rewards package

  • Serve as the primary benefits leader presenting recommendations, performance updates, and strategic initiatives to senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders

  • Oversee all vendor and carrier relationships across health, retirement, and ancillary benefit programs, including performance monitoring, contract management, and escalation protocols

  • Lead benefits RFP processes as needed, managing the full cycle from vendor selection strategy through negotiation, implementation, and onboarding

  • Own the annual enrollment process from strategic planning through post-enrollment reconciliation, ensuring a seamless and accurate employee experience

  • Direct the development of employee communication and engagement campaigns that drive benefit awareness, informed decision-making, and program utilization

  • Ensure all benefit programs remain compliant with applicable federal and state regulations, proactively assessing the impact of legislative changes on the organization

  • Partner with HR leadership, Finance, and Legal to align benefits strategy with broader workforce objectives, budgetary goals, and fiduciary responsibilities

Qualifications

  • 10+ years experience managing benefits operations encompassing the implementation of benefit programs, administration and compliance of qualified retirement plans, health and welfare benefit plans and wellness initiatives in a complex integrated healthcare system or multi-divisional company

  • Broad benefits leadership experience spanning both health & welfare (medical, dental, vision) and financial benefits (401k, pension, deferred compensation, financial wellness programs)

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate diverse benefit offerings into a cohesive total rewards strategy aligned with organizational goals and workforce needs

  • Executive presence with the ability to present to and influence senior leaders, translating complex benefits data into clear, compelling narratives for C-suite audiences

  • Experience representing the benefits function in cross-functional leadership forums alongside HR, Finance, Legal, and Operations

  • Strong preference for candidates with healthcare system experience, given the unique workforce composition, regulatory complexity, and benefit structure inherent to large health organizations

  • Proven track record managing end-to-end benefits RFP processes, including vendor selection strategy, evaluation frameworks, stakeholder alignment, and contract negotiation

  • Hands-on experience managing the full annual enrollment lifecycle, including communication strategy, employee engagement, technology platforms, and post-enrollment auditing

  • Deep knowledge of benefits-related regulatory requirements including ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, and IRS guidelines, with experience ensuring organizational compliance across all benefit programs
