Staff Accountant
Location: In‑Office | Freehold, NJ
Contract – To – Hire
An established environmental engineering and consulting firm is seeking a detail‑oriented Staff Accountant to join its accounting team. This role will support daily accounting operations, month‑end close, and financial reporting while working closely with senior leadership. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, organized, and eager to grow within a professional services environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and post monthly journal entries to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
- Perform bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations, researching and resolving variances
- Review billing activity, prepare accruals, and support month‑end close processes
- Assist with the preparation of internal financial statements and management reports
- Review invoices, expense reports, and credit card transactions in accordance with company policies
- Set up new vendors and subcontractors, ensuring all required documentation is collected and verified (W‑9s, Certificates of Insurance, contracts, and compliance materials)
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and assist with month‑end and year‑end close activities
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed
- Assist with year‑end audits by preparing documentation and responding to auditor requests
- Maintain lease accounting and fixed asset records, including depreciation schedules
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and contribute to process improvement initiatives
- Perform additional accounting projects and duties as assigned by leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 2+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong understanding of accounting principles
- Experience with lease accounting and fixed assets
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems (experience with Deltek Vision or Vantagepoint is a plus)
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
Compensation & Benefits
- Estimated annual compensation range: $65,000-$75,000
