Summary
A Beacon Hill client in the nonprofit space is seeking a Controller to join their Finance team in Philadelphia, PA (Hybrid). Our client is looking to hire an Interim Controller, or a Controller on a Contract to Hire basis. The ideal candidate will bring strong nonprofit accounting leadership, audit experience, and a mission-driven mindset. Compensation sits between 45 to 60 an hour, depending on experience.
Position Summary
- Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and cash management
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards
- Manage fund accounting, including restricted and unrestricted funds
- Support the CFO with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Oversee annual audit process and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations
- Oversee preparation and filing of Form 990 and other regulatory reports
- Manage grant, contract, and donor-restricted financial reporting
- Maintain and enhance internal controls, policies, and procedures
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff; support professional development
Technical Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit experience
- Prior experience in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting
- Hands-on experience managing audits and Form 990 filings
- Experience with grants, donor-restricted funds, and compliance reporting
- Proficiency with accounting systems and strong Excel skills
