Position Overview
The Accounting Manager will oversee the day to day accounting operations and financial reporting activities for the organization. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring timely reporting, and supporting compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
This individual will play a key role in managing core accounting functions, strengthening internal controls, and supporting financial planning efforts. The ideal candidate is a hands on accounting professional with nonprofit experience and a track record of improving processes and systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily accounting activities including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed assets
- Ensure financial records are maintained in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Lead monthly and year end close processes
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting documentation for leadership
- Assist with budget to actual analysis and variance identification
- Support preparation of financial materials for executive leadership and board reporting
- Maintain accurate records for grants and restricted funds
- Coordinate the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors
- Support preparation of Form 990 and other required filings
- Ensure compliance with financial policies, donor restrictions, and regulatory requirements
- Assist with annual budgeting and departmental budget reviews
- Monitor expenses and support financial forecasting activities
- Support cash flow monitoring and short term projections
- Reconcile bank and investment accounts
- Track investment activity and endowment balances
- Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting procedures
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy within the finance function
- Support documentation of financial policies and procedures
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Provide guidance on best practices and technical accounting matters
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to support organizational goals
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
- At least 3 years of supervisory experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience with financial reporting, audits, and reconciliations
- Familiarity with grants accounting and restricted funds is a plus
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem solving skills
