Job Summary

A well-established manufacturing company is seeking an Indirect Tax Specialist to support U.S. sales and use tax compliance as well as property tax. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely multi-state filings, minimizing compliance risk, and collaborating with Finance and IT teams to improve processes and system configurations. As the organization continues to grow, this position may expand to include additional indirect tax and compliance responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and file U.S. state and local sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions
  • Reconcile sales and use tax accounts and ensure timely payment and remittance
  • Manage exemption certificate compliance, including customer and vendor documentation
  • Respond to state and local tax notices and assist with audit inquiries
  • Monitor nexus thresholds and support timely registration in new jurisdictions as business activities expand
  • Maintain and support ERP tax configurations related to U.S. sales and use tax
  • Partner with Finance and IT to identify process improvements and support automation initiatives
  • Assist with maintaining internal controls, documentation, and compliance procedures related to indirect taxes
  • Research evolving indirect tax requirements (e.g., gross receipts taxes, environmental or industry-specific levies)
  • Provide support for non-U.S. indirect tax matters, such as Canadian GST/HST, excise, or property taxes, as needed
  • Contribute to broader compliance and reporting initiatives within the Finance/Tax function

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in U.S. sales and use tax compliance (multi-state experience preferred)
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines

Preferred

  • CPA or other relevant professional certification
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, distribution, or industrial operations
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, JDE) and indirect tax software solutions (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, etc.)
  • Exposure to Canadian indirect tax rules
