Accounting Manager – Washington, DC
Overview
Beacon Hill Financial has partnered with a mission‑driven nonprofit organization in Washington, DC in their search for an Accounting Manager to join their finance team. This role is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day accounting operations, managing a small accounting team, and ensuring accurate financial reporting in a fast‑paced environment. The ideal candidate brings strong operational accounting experience, nonprofit exposure, and a hands‑on leadership style.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll activities.
- Manage month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Prepare and review financial statements, schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and nonprofit regulatory requirements.
- Oversee payroll processing and serve as a hands‑on resource when coverage is needed.
- Manage AP and AR workflows, approvals, and reconciliations to support strong operational controls.
- Supervise, mentor, and hold accounting staff accountable to deadlines and performance expectations.
- Partner with leadership to support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Coordinate with external auditors and prepare materials for annual audits and reviews.
- Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen efficiency and scalability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Prior experience in a nonprofit or membership‑based organization strongly preferred.
- Hands‑on experience with AP, AR, payroll, and month‑end close required.
- Proven experience managing or mentoring accounting staff.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required (VLOOKUPs, XLOOKUPs; ability to work with complex data sets).
- Experience with mid‑to‑large ERP systems preferred (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, PeopleSoft, or similar).
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills with a proactive, accountable work style.
