Accounting Compliance & Special Projects Manager – Washington, DC
Beacon Hill is working with a growing organization who is seeking an Accounting Compliance & Special Projects Manager to join their fast-paced accounting team. This role will partner closely with accounting leadership and oversee a high volume of time-sensitive, compliance-driven workflows. The ideal candidate is extremely organized, comfortable managing multiple deadlines at once, and brings a strong understanding of audit and tax processes without directly performing audits or preparing returns. This position will also provide oversight and coordination for a small team supporting these initiatives.
If you thrive in a busy, deadline-oriented environment and enjoy being the “air traffic controller” who keeps complex processes moving on time, this could be a great fit.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Coordinate federal, state, and local tax filings and compliance requirements by partnering with external auditors and tax preparers
- Manage end-to-end compliance workflows, including collecting documentation, tracking deadlines, coordinating reviews, and preparing approval-ready packages
- Maintain detailed compliance calendars, trackers, and documentation to ensure all filings and deliverables are completed on time
- Perform reasonableness and quality checks on completed tax returns and compliance filings prior to leadership review
- Track and help resolve tax notices, discrepancies, and follow-up items with external partners and government agencies
- Support annual audit processes by coordinating timelines, request lists, draft reviews, and audit adjustments
- Assist with setup and maintenance of government portals, registrations, and authorization documentation
- Coordinate tax-related payments, approvals, and special compliance items in accordance with internal policies
- Support accounting components of the annual budget cycle, including template maintenance, QA reviews, and system updates
- Oversee accounting-related onboarding and offboarding activities, including data transfers, reconciliations, and final close-out items
- Build and maintain process documentation, checklists, and repeatable workflows to improve efficiency and reduce risk
- Provide regular status updates to accounting leadership and escalate issues or risks as needed
- Lead and support a team of accounting staff to ensure deliverables are completed accurately and on schedule
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in accounting operations, compliance, audit/tax coordination, or a similarly deadline-driven environment
- Prior knowledge of audit and tax processes, with the ability to manage workflows and timelines
- Familiarity with multi-state and DC-area regulatory environments
- 2+ years of people leadership or team oversight experience preferred
- Proven ability to manage high-volume, high-consequence workflows
- Exceptionally strong organizational, project management, and follow-through skills
- Clear, confident communicator able to work effectively with internal teams and external partners
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-demand office environment
