Assistant Controller

Position Summary

The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the accounting team under the direction of the Controller. This role is hands-on and plays a key part in ensuring all accounting activities are accurate, timely, and compliant with GAAP. Core responsibilities include reviewing payroll, accounts payable and receivable, account reconciliations, and journal entries. The Assistant Controller also supports annual audits, retirement plan audits, and prepares required nonprofit tax filings. This position works closely with the Controller to help drive departmental priorities and maintain strong internal controls.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review and approve recurring financial transactions and accounting activities
  • Identify errors or inconsistencies in financial records and recommend corrective action
  • Document accounting processes and identify opportunities for process improvements
  • Prepare audit workpapers and supporting schedules for annual financial audits and employee benefit plan audits
  • Coordinate the preparation and filing of Forms 990 and 990‑T, including Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) calculations
  • Lead the accounting team in meeting month‑end close deadlines and account reconciliation schedules
  • Partner with finance leadership on ERP and budgeting/planning system maintenance, including system hierarchies and report development
  • Coordinate with the Controller to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll and general ledger transactions
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all general accounting functions to support coverage and cross‑training as needed
  • Maintain and enforce internal controls within areas of responsibility
  • Supervise payroll and general accounting staff
  • Participate in the annual budgeting process
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • CPA preferred
  • 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility over payroll and general accounting functions within a nonprofit environment
  • Experience with multi‑entity or consolidated nonprofit reporting strongly preferred
  • Experience overseeing or supporting an organizational budget of $40M or more
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and time‑management skills

Systems Experience

  • ADP experience required
  • Experience with Oracle Fusion ERP and related planning/budgeting systems (PBCS) is a plus
