Medical Director (Life & Health Insurance)

Position Overview

The Medical Director provides expert medical leadership to support life and health insurance risk selection, claims management, and product development. This role focuses on translating clinical knowledge and medical literature into practical underwriting and claims guidance, while partnering closely with business stakeholders to support sound, fair risk decisions.


Requirements

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school with 5+ years of clinical experience (Internal Medicine or Family Medicine preferred).
  • Hands-on experience in insurance medicine and claims (required), with strong understanding of underwriting and risk assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with underwriters, claims examiners, and business partners.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical literature and the ability to evaluate clinical research for insurance relevance.

Job Duties

  • Provide expert medical consultation to underwriting and claims teams, supporting risk selection and claims decisions.
  • Develop and maintain medical impairment and underwriting guidelines aligned with product strategy and risk appetite.
  • Translate emerging medical advances, research, and data sources into practical guidance and updated standards.
  • Deliver medical education and training to underwriters and claims examiners using scalable, innovative formats.
  • Monitor medical literature and emerging risks, providing concise, relevant updates and thought leadership to stakeholders.
  • Contribute medical expertise to risk mitigation strategies and evolving business initiatives.
  • Mentor and oversee medical professionals while serving as a visible leader within the insurance medicine community.

Additional Information

  • Work Arrangement: Fully remote; ability to work Central Time Zone business hours
  • Schedule: Part‑time, 5-15 hours per week, Monday-Friday between 8:00am-4:00pm CST
  • Expected Pay Range: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience (discussed during interview process)
