Overview

A professional services organization based in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and lead core financial functions. This role partners closely with leadership and plays a key part in maintaining the integrity of financial reporting, ensuring compliance, and supporting operational efficiency across the organization.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full client billing cycle, including pre-bills, invoice generation, edits, write-offs, and final submission
  • Ensure billing accuracy and compliance with client guidelines, engagement terms, and contract requirements
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to review time entries, resolve billing discrepancies, and ensure timely submissions
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and lead collections efforts to improve cash flow
  • Maintain and reconcile client-related accounts in accordance with industry-specific compliance requirements
  • Support day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll coordination, cash management, and general ledger activity
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Ensure all financial transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP and internal policies
  • Review and approve vendor payments, ensuring proper authorization and coding
  • Prepare billing analyses and financial reports for leadership
  • Train internal teams on billing procedures, timekeeping protocols, and financial processes
  • Support process improvements, system enhancements, and ad hoc financial projects

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, ideally within a professional services environment
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and core accounting functions (GL, close, reconciliations)
  • Experience with complex billing operations, including client-specific requirements and collections management
  • Exposure to trust or regulated account management preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience working with financial reporting tools
  • Experience with ERP or accounting systems; exposure to industry-specific platforms is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate across teams
  • Law Firm experience preferred
