Staff Accountant – Washington, DC

Overview
Our client in Washington, DC is seeking a Staff Accountant to support their accounting and finance operations. This position plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, with a focus on general ledger activity, grant accounting, and financial reporting in a nonprofit environment. The ideal candidate brings strong attention to detail, organization, and experience working with restricted funding and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily accounting functions, including preparation of journal entries, maintaining the general ledger, and supporting the month-end close process.
  • Perform reconciliations for bank accounts, prepaid expenses, and other balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Support grant and fund accounting activities, including tracking restricted funds and monitoring expenditures against grant requirements.
  • Prepare grant-related billings, invoices, and financial reports in alignment with donor guidelines and reporting deadlines.
  • Analyze grant budgets versus actual spending and assist with financial tracking across multiple funding sources.
  • Contribute to accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, including invoice processing and cash application.
  • Assist with audit support, including compiling documentation and responding to auditor requests.
  • Produce internal financial reports and assist in the preparation of financial statements.
  • Work cross-functionally with program staff and finance team members to ensure proper financial reporting and compliance.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve overall efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience within a nonprofit environment, including exposure to grant accounting and restricted funds, required.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Prior experience supporting audits and preparing financial documentation is preferred.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (such as QuickBooks, MIP, NetSuite, or similar) and strong Excel skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
