Senior Staff Accountant

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to join a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This position will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting monthly and year-end close processes, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The ideal candidate will bring strong general ledger experience, a collaborative mindset, and a solid understanding of nonprofit accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of financial transactions.
  • Prepare financial statements and supporting reports for leadership.
  • Monitor and analyze budget-to-actual results and investigate variances.
  • Support grant accounting, restricted funds tracking, and donor reporting requirements.
  • Assist with annual audits, tax filings, and compliance reporting.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and other key financial records.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and strengthen internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Prior nonprofit accounting experience required.
  • Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Experience with grant accounting, fund accounting, or restricted funds strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
