About The Opportunity
A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, managing audits, overseeing grants and restricted funding, and providing financial guidance to organizational leadership. The Controller will play a key role in supporting the organization’s mission through strong financial stewardship and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Monitor grant funding, restricted funds, and donor contributions to ensure proper accounting and reporting.
- Lead the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors.
- Prepare and review IRS Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
- Develop and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and accounting procedures.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives.
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff while promoting a collaborative team environment.
- Support strategic decision-making through financial reporting and performance analysis.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant management, and fund accounting.
- Experience managing audits and financial reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Experience
- Nonprofit, association, advocacy, foundation, or mission-driven organization experience.
- Experience with grant-funded programs and donor-restricted funds.
- Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership or board members.
