We are partnering with a mission driven national nonprofit organization seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations and financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, month end close, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Maintain strong internal controls and oversee balance sheet reconciliations
  • Improve accounting processes, workflows, and systems to drive efficiency and scalability
  • Oversee revenue recognition, grants accounting, donor restricted funds, and cost allocations
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high performing accounting team
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and succession planning
  • Partner with executive leadership to support organizational priorities and strategic initiatives
  • Lead annual external audit process and preparation of supporting schedules
  • Oversee tax filings including Form 990 in partnership with outside advisors
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, federal funding requirements, and internal policies
  • Support fraud risk management, documentation retention, and financial governance practices
  • Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Oversee cash flow reporting and liquidity planning
  • Maintain relationships with banks, financial institutions, and investment partners
  • Provide reporting and financial insights to leadership and board committees

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 5 years in leadership
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Nonprofit accounting experience highly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, audits, and financial reporting
  • Experience with grants, restricted funding, and compliance reporting preferred
  • Proven ability to lead teams, improve processes, and communicate with senior leadership
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong ERP systems experience required
  • Experience with NetSuite preferred
