Position Overview
The Controller will serve as a key accounting and finance leader within the organization, overseeing day-to-day accounting operations in a fast-paced, project-driven construction environment. This individual will manage the accounting team, maintain accurate financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, and drive process improvement initiatives across multiple entities and active construction projects.
This role requires a hands-on accounting leader who can operate both strategically and tactically while partnering closely with executive leadership and operational teams.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations including AP, AR, Payroll, GL, and month-end close
- Manage and monitor WIP schedules across approximately 50 active projects/jobs
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting processes
- Maintain oversight of income tax, sales tax, bank reconciliations, and compliance-related reporting
- Partner with external CPA firm on year-end financials and audit support
- Oversee accounting for multiple entities/subsidiaries with separate P&Ls
- Improve accounting workflows, automate manual processes, and strengthen internal controls
- Clean up backlogged accounting activity and establish scalable accounting procedures
- Support operational leadership with project financial oversight and reporting
- Mentor, develop, and manage accounting staff within a collaborative environment
- Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial data and reporting
Qualifications
- Controller experience within a General Contractor or construction environment required
- Strong WIP and project accounting experience required
- Experience overseeing AP, Payroll, and AR teams
- Strong understanding of construction accounting and internal controls
- Experience managing multi-entity or subsidiary accounting environments preferred
- Ability to operate in both strategic and hands-on capacities
- Experience improving and automating accounting processes
- Sage 100 experience preferred
- CPA or CPA-track highly preferred
Compensation & Work Environment
- Base salary of approximately $180,000 plus discretionary bonus
- 100% onsite opportunity located in the East Bay
