Payroll Systems & HRIS Consultant

Some projects need more than someone who knows how to run payroll. They need someone who can step back, understand how the entire process fits together, and build a better way forward.

Our Portland-area client is seeking a Payroll Systems & HRIS Consultant for a project-based engagement focused on Paychex, payroll process redesign, and broader systems improvement. This is an opportunity to walk into a complicated environment, solve an immediate business need, and leave the team with stronger processes and a clear roadmap for what comes next.

In this role, you will:

  • Assess the current Paychex setup and payroll process
  • Help transition payroll from projected monthly hours to hours already worked
  • Define timecard deadlines, approval workflows, processing timelines, and downstream impacts
  • Gather requirements from payroll, HR, finance, and system users
  • Map current-state and future-state workflows
  • Identify system gaps, manual workarounds, and process dependencies
  • Coordinate with Paychex and other vendors on configuration and process changes
  • Implement practical quick wins where feasible
  • Document longer-term recommendations in a prioritized roadmap

The expectation is not to fix every system during the engagement. Success means addressing the immediate payroll priority, bringing clarity to the broader environment, implementing achievable improvements, and giving the team a clear plan for the remaining work.

To be considered for this Payroll Systems & HRIS Consultant opportunity, you will need:

  • 5+ years of payroll systems and HRIS experience
  • Paychex experience
  • Experience improving or redesigning payroll processes
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end payroll workflows
  • Systems assessment, configuration, implementation, or optimization experience
  • Requirements gathering and process-mapping experience
  • Ability to independently lead discovery and create an actionable roadmap

This is a full-time, hybrid project in the Portland area with flexibility built into the schedule.

If you are energized by untangling complicated systems, improving how work gets done, and seeing the impact of your work, please apply. We would welcome the opportunity to connect.
