Position Overview
A law firm based in Chicago is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Paralegal to support its patent practice. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience handling foreign patent prosecution and will play a key role in managing international filings and coordinating with global partners. The firm emphasizes a strong service-oriented approach and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support attorneys in coordinating and responding to communications from international patent associates.
  • Prepare and process documentation such as powers of attorney, notarized and legalized documents, and related prosecution materials.
  • Assist with patent office action responses and correspondence related to international filings, including annuity and maintenance matters.
  • Maintain and manage patent dockets, track deadlines, and ensure timely filings across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Monitor case timelines and proactively follow up on upcoming deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, internal stakeholders, and external partners, including foreign agents.
  • Handle electronic filing of legal documents and maintain familiarity with e-filing systems.
  • Provide support for litigation-related activities, including preparation for depositions, hearings, and other proceedings as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of relevant education and professional experience.
  • Completion of a paralegal studies program or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of three years of paralegal experience in a law firm setting, with a focus on intellectual property.
  • Experience with foreign patent prosecution is required.
  • Familiarity with e-discovery tools (experience with platforms like Relativity is a plus).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar productivity software.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solid analytical skills and good judgment in identifying and escalating issues.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
