A growing, multi-entity nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced National Controller to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and audit functions. This highly visible leadership role will partner closely with executive leadership to strengthen financial infrastructure, improve processes, and support organizational growth. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with the ability to lead teams, build scalable systems, and ensure regulatory compliance across a complex environment.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

Oversee general ledger activities and core accounting functions.
Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
Ensure accurate accounting treatment for revenues, expenses, and allocations.
Maintain the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting.

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

Lead annual financial audits and other compliance reviews.
Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
Maintain audit readiness through proper documentation and controls.
Develop, enhance, and monitor internal accounting policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, funding, and reporting requirements.

Systems & Process Improvement

Evaluate and enhance accounting systems, reporting tools, and financial workflows.
Partner with cross-functional teams to improve data integration and reporting accuracy.
Identify opportunities to automate processes and increase efficiency.
Help build scalable financial processes to support future growth.

Team Leadership

Manage, mentor, and develop accounting and finance staff.
Establish clear goals, accountability measures, and professional development plans.
Foster a collaborative, high-performance finance team culture.

Fund Accounting & Financial Stewardship

Oversee accounting and reporting for restricted and unrestricted funding sources.
Ensure accurate tracking of grants, contracts, and program expenditures.
Provide guidance on financial compliance and reporting requirements.
Support organizational planning through sound financial management practices.

Organizational Partnership

Partner with leadership and operational teams on financial initiatives.
Support consistent accounting practices across multiple entities or locations.
Provide financial insights and recommendations to support decision-making.
Help identify and mitigate financial and operational risks.
