Placing Technical Talent to Support Research and Development Team’s Machine Learning Initiative for Cashier-free Stores
Challenge
In November 2021, our existing client, an American convenience store chain, rolled out a machine learning program for their research and development (R&D) team to design and build back- and front-end prototype systems for cashier-free customer experiences, including self-checkout and mobile checkout. Through this project, our client aimed to improve the overall checkout experience for their customers while increasing store revenues.
For this project to succeed, the front-end and full-stack software engineers needed solid technical backgrounds and a passion for new languages, technologies, and frameworks. From creating an experimental machine learning prototype to deploying a production-ready back-end system, these engineers needed to be ready to wear many different hats to see projects completed.
Solution
Upon receiving the exciting news of becoming a preferred vendor for this initiative, we were tasked with filling several project-based software development (front-end and full stack) contract positions. In a remarkable display of efficiency, within twenty-four hours, we had presented three prescreened candidates for each role. Our client was so impressed that they selected only Beacon Hill consultants for each position! As of May 2024, we’ve filled all seven positions needed for this project and are actively presenting candidates for upcoming positions, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to our client’s success.
Achievements
Our client’s satisfaction with the talent we placed was evident. Within only six months, one of our consultants was converted to an internal, full-time equivalent (FTE). After the initial twelve-month contract, all six remaining positions were asked to extend their contracts. As a testament to our ability to provide long-term solutions, two more consultants were converted to internal FTEs. Importantly, all seven people we placed with our client are still on assignment or working as internal FTEs. Despite our client’s active approval of other vendors to support this contract, they prefer partnering with us due to the caliber of talent we present and place, as well as the speed at which we respond to their needs, solidifying our position as a trusted partner.
